North Dakota Insurance Department
North Dakota Insurance Department leverages the state’s stable regulatory environment and lower-cost, weather-related losses to create a competitive advantage for insurance companies while promoting responsible practices that protect our communities and resources.
The North Dakota State Insurance Department has taken a proactive stance in fostering resilience and sustainability across the state through targeted investments and innovative programs. Recognizing the unique risks posed by year-round natural hazards, the department has partnered with state and federal entities to establish robust infrastructure projects aimed at reducing the impact of these events. Since 2019, North Dakota has directed over $36.7 million toward mitigation efforts across communities, resulting in an estimated $54.8 million in avoided losses. These initiatives prioritize flood mitigation, storm preparedness and key infrastructure upgrades, including roads and bridges, facility generators, community storm shelters, and sewer and flood control systems.
One of the key funding sources for these initiatives is the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) grant, a competitive FEMA program that awards funds to forward-thinking risk reduction projects. North Dakota’s focus on proactive resilience was well-recognized in FY2023 when it ranked fourth nationally per capita for BRIC funding received, securing $10.5 million. The funds have been directed toward crucial projects like lagoon mitigation and water intake improvements, which strengthen the state’s ability to withstand and recover from environmental disruptions. By investing in community resilience, North Dakota not only protects its infrastructure but also builds a sustainable foundation for future growth and stability. These efforts by the North Dakota State Insurance Department underscore a commitment to long-term sustainability and resilience. Through continued investment in critical infrastructure and community preparedness, the state aims to mitigate the costly impacts of natural hazards and ensure safer, more resilient communities across North Dakota.
